Innovative dentist brings US-inspired treatment to expanding Welsh practice

A LEADING dental practice renowned for its patient-centred care is proud to welcome a new team member set to bridge experience with innovation.

Alison Kime has joined West End Dental’s Porthmadog surgery, further strengthening a team that already serves patients across North Wales from its Llangefni, Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay clinics, where the group’s headquarters are based.

Originally from North Yorkshire, Alison brings almost four decades of clinical expertise spanning both general and special care dentistry.

Her journey into the profession began early, inspired by her mother, a physiotherapist who suggested dentistry after her own positive treatment.

Shadowing the family dentist soon confirmed Alison’s sense of vocation, setting her on a career that has combined technical skill with compassion for patients of all ages and backgrounds.

Speaking about her new role, Alison said: “Joining such a patient-centred practice as West End Dental is fantastic. The feedback and warmth from patients and colleagues alike have been incredible.

“I’m passionate about minimal intervention dentistry, which is all about preserving natural teeth wherever possible, and I look forward to many happy years providing this kind of care in Porthmadog.”

Alison qualified from Guy’s Hospital in London, where she was introduced to the then-radical concept of minimally invasive dentistry. This philosophy, focusing on preserving natural teeth and reducing unnecessary intervention, remains central to her methods today.

Her career has been wide-ranging; having returned to North Yorkshire she provided care as a family dentist, before moving to the Midlands to take on specialist roles treating patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries and advanced neurological conditions.

This experience in special care dentistry deepened her understanding of how oral health connects with wider wellbeing.

Since relocating to North Wales in 1997, Alison has combined over a decade in community dentistry with time in general practice in Penrhyndeudraeth. There she developed close ties with patients before making the move to join West End Dental.

Alison also brings expertise in innovative treatments such as Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)—a quick, effective and non-invasive treatment for active caries. While SDF is widely used in the US, it remains relatively uncommon in the UK, making Alison’s experience especially valuable.

Aaron Ferguson, Managing Director of West End Dental, welcomed her appointment: “We’re delighted to have Alison on board. Her career reflects not only clinical excellence but also a true commitment to putting patients at the heart of everything she does.

“At West End Dental we pride ourselves on that personal touch, and Alison’s patient-centred approach and wealth of experience fit perfectly with our values.”

Outside of dentistry, Alison leads an active and community-focused life. She is a deacon at Criccieth Family Church and sings in the church band alongside her husband Andy, who plays bass guitar. She has volunteered as a youth worker for more than 25 years, reflecting the same caring values she brings to her professional life.

In her spare time, she enjoys Zumba, motorcycling through the Welsh countryside in her distinctive Beatrix Potter–themed helmet, and taking slower scenic drives in her classic Beetle, affectionately known as ‘Betty Blue’.
