OLIVER Wilkinson has the drive to succeed – both on and off the course.
A pupil at St Gerard’s School in Bangor, Oliver has already shown the form of a future star with a 3.2 handicap and the ability to send the ball soaring 320 yards down the fairway.
But his story isn’t just about talent; it’s about resilience. Just three years ago, the 17 year-old suffered a serious rugby injury that sidelined him for up to nine months.
During that time, he swapped the pitch for the tee box, and golf became the focus that carried him through rehabilitation.
Today, Oliver is taking part in both junior and adult competitions across Wales and the UK and can be found on the course before and after school, practising at both Nefyn and Abersoch golf clubs, despite the famously windy conditions of the Llyn Peninsula.
“Golf gave me focus during recovery,” said Oliver, from Nefyn.
“I’d never really played before, but I quickly realised how much I loved it. I want to keep pushing myself and see how far I can go in the sport. My ultimate dream is to play professionally.”
Oliver’s hard work is already paying off. He recently competed at the prestigious Gareth Bale Festival of Sport at Celtic Manor Resort, supported by Wales Golf.
He also plays for Caernarfonshire County Under 18s and North Wales Counties Golf Association for the U18s and U21s.
Alongside his golf, Oliver is balancing his A Levels in PE, Biology and Business Studies, with hopes of pursuing a PGA qualification in the UK or US.
Mum Elaine spoke of her immense pride in her son’s progress.
She said: “Oliver is relentless in his effort and determination. He spends hours every day at the golf club, constantly refining his swing and working on every detail of his game.
“What makes me proudest, though, is his attitude. After such a tough injury, he didn’t give up, he started again with golf. That strength will carry him a long way.”
St Gerard’s headteacher Campbell Harrison, added: “Oliver is an inspirational young man whose journey shows how dedication and passion can turn setbacks into opportunities.
“At St Gerard’s, we are proud to support him academically and athletically, and we will continue to encourage not just elite sporting success, but participation across all levels. Oliver embodies everything we stand for: hard work, perseverance, and the courage to follow your dreams.”
Despite his natural ability, Oliver remains grounded. Self-taught in many aspects of his game through countless hours watching videos and learning by instinct, he hopes to find a mentor or coach who can help guide him as he transitions to higher levels of competition.
His golfing hero, Min Woo Lee, inspires him with his spirit and determination, qualities Oliver himself clearly shares.
With two more years at St Gerard’s ahead, Oliver continues to balance studies, tournaments, and now driving lessons – although he admits the real challenge will be finding a car with a boot big enough for all his clubs!
